Sydney
Airport (also known as
Kingsford Smith Airport,
after the famous Australian
aviator who completed the
first flight from the USA to
Australia in 1928, arriving
in Brisbane after an 83 hour
trip) is Australias busiest
and most important
commercial airport. Sydney
International Airport was
opened in 1920 and is one of
the oldest continuously
operating airports in the
world.
Although the
busiest airport in
Australia, Sydney Airport
covers just 880 hectares on
the northern shoreline of
Botany Bay, and thus
occupies the smallest land
area of any of the capital
city airport.
Sydney
airport processed almost 24
million passengers in 2002
(about 35% of these were
international travellers),
with just over 250 000
aircraft movements
