About
Virgin Blue
In August 2000, after 15 years
in the Airline Industry, the
Virgin group of companies,
under the name 'Virgin Blue'
began delivering low cost
airfares to the Australian
travelling public.
Since commencing operations
with just a few planes on the
Sydney to Brisbane route,
Virgin Blue has captured the
imagination of Australian
travellers and has grown in
the last 3 years to a point
where it now commands 30%
(December 17 2003) of the
Australian domestic airline
market.
The name ‘Virgin Blue’ was
selected following an
Australia wide competition,
and was deemed appropriate for
several reasons, one being due
to the relationship between
the bright red colour of the
planes and the traditional
Aussie nickname for a person
with red hair, which is of
course, ‘blue’ or ‘bluey’.
While another reason the name
seemed appropriate was the
classically Australian
sentiment of being ‘True Blue’
which refers to being truly
Australian especially in the
area of honouring the Aussie
notion of a ‘fair go’ for all.
Virgin Blue now fly's to many
destinations within Australia,
including all the major
capital cities; Canberra,
Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart,
Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and
Darwin, as well as the major
tourist destinations and
regional centres such as
Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Gold
Coast, Sunshine Coast,
Rockhampton, Mackay, The
Whitsunday Coast, Townsville,
Cairns, Alice Springs, Broome
and Launceston
